The dynamics of gross gaming revenue (GGR) growth in Macau have undergone significant changes over time. Currently, substantial spending by premium clients necessitates a greater number of high-end hotel rooms.
The traditional model of the past was straightforward: an increase in hotel room availability naturally led to a rise in gross gaming revenue. However, this logic has shifted.
In a recent report, Citigroup analysts George Choi and Timothy Chau highlighted that the new growth driver for Macau's gaming sector is the expansion of high-end hotel room offerings tailored for premium clients, who typically place larger bets. Staying in spacious and exclusive rooms directly influences the number of hands visitors play at the tables during their time in Macau.
This shift towards premium clientele reflects broader trends in global markets. The implications of this change are clear: while the total number of hotel rooms may decrease, gross gaming revenue is expected to continue rising due to the addition of new luxury suites in hotels.
Several key events are anticipated to further boost the premium mass market. Major casino operators are set to expand their suite offerings in the coming years, particularly in 2025. Analysts Choi and Chau also expect the number of visitors to Macau to rise to approximately 35.7 million by 2025, which will lead to an increase in both players and gaming revenue.
Citigroup forecasts that in the fiscal year 2025, Macau's GGR will grow by 7%, reaching 242.5 billion patacas (approximately $30.2 billion). Furthermore, it is expected that in 2026, gross gaming revenue will increase by another 8% to 261.9 billion patacas (around $32.7 billion).
Meanwhile, casinos in Macau are actively incorporating smart tables for baccarat games.
