Bruce Rupert and Shelly Brewer, a married couple from Lower Norton in New Brunswick, Canada, won a million dollars (approximately 60.27 million rubles) in Lotto 6/49 this past February. In a recent interview with a local publication, they shared how the windfall has impacted their lives.
The 57-year-old Rupert, a former military service member, spent a decade as a firefighter and another 23 years as a paramedic. He described winning the lottery as a "paycheck without the need to grind away at work." Meanwhile, 63-year-old Brewer emphasized her frugal nature, stating, "I’m not a big spender. I’ve never been one to go out and buy jewelry, a lot of clothes, makeup, and so on. I’ve never been that kind of woman."
The couple revealed that they invested nearly all of their winnings to generate a modest but stable income. Brewer mentioned that she still hunts for sales at the grocery store, while Rupert continues to get his hair cut at home, just as he always has.
However, they did splurge on new vehicles—a GMC Sierra for Rupert and a 2021 Buick Encore for Brewer. Interestingly, Brewer won $200 in a contest held by the dealership on the same day they purchased the cars. The highlight for her, though, was gifting her old Kia Forte to their daughter.
Rupert noted that it took him some time to fully grasp that he no longer needed to rush off to work. "There was a moment when I thought I overslept. I washed up, took a shower, put on my uniform, walked to the door, and realized, wait a minute, I’m retired, what am I doing?" he said. He also mentioned that he continues to buy lottery tickets about twice a week, with Brewer adding that he often wins small amounts.
