A couple from Annapolis, Maryland, won $2 million in the Powerball lottery on April 1, 2024, thanks to two tickets with identical number combinations.
The husband shared their winning story with Maryland Lottery officials, explaining that he used a terminal at a 7-Eleven on Bestgate Road to scan their existing tickets and purchase new ones. Some of the new tickets turned out to be duplicates, as the number sets matched perfectly.
Upon learning that two winning tickets worth $1 million each had been sold at the same 7-Eleven, the man quickly returned to verify their tickets. Initially, he found that several tickets had won modest prizes of $4 each. However, while scanning another ticket, he realized he had won a million dollars, as the first five numbers matched the winning draw.
Overjoyed, he called his wife to share the news, and both were brought to tears. At that moment, they had no idea what was to come next. "He joked about it, saying, 'I still have tickets to check. What if there's another million-dollar winner?'" his wife recalled.
The odds of winning $1 million by matching five numbers are approximately 1 in 11,688,053. "It was amazing. I had no idea I had doubled that amount," the husband expressed, sharing his excitement. The couple also mentioned plans to invest their winnings.
Powerball is played in 45 states, including Washington, D.C., the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. To participate, players must select five numbers from 1 to 69 and a special number from 1 to 26. Ticket prices start at $2 and can go up to $4 if additional features are included to enhance winning chances.
In a notable related event, a resident of New Jersey recently won $1.13 billion in the Mega Millions lottery.
