Last week, 11 cleaners from India won $1.2 million (approximately 109.9 million rubles) in the lottery after pooling their money to buy just one ticket.
According to the Press Trust of India, prior to their win, the women earned so little that some had to borrow money to purchase the lottery ticket, which cost $3 (274 rubles). Two of the winners contributed 15 cents (14 rubles) each, while the other nine chipped in 30 cents (27 rubles) each.
One of the women remarked, "We have bought lottery tickets together before, but this is the first time we've managed to win the jackpot."
The women work as waste collectors in Parappanangadi, a town in the southern Indian state of Kerala, where they typically earn around $3 (274 rubles) a day. They also make extra income by selling the recyclable materials they collect. Their earnings are often insufficient to support their families, forcing them to take out loans to cover their children's education.
After taxes, the winners will receive about $765,000 (70 million rubles), which will be divided among them. Two of the women will each receive a tenth of the total share, amounting to $76,500 (7 million rubles), while the remaining nine will split the rest equally.
According to the cost of living aggregator LivingCost, a typical family of four in Kerala requires around $843 (77,000 rubles) per month to live comfortably.
All the women plan to continue working in their current jobs. One of them shared, "We have the cleanest municipality in Malappuram. We will keep working to maintain that status. Right now, we just hope that others here can also win the lottery."
In related news, we previously reported that a jackpot of £11.6 million was won in the UK National Lottery.
