Last week marked the search for a new multimillionaire in Melbourne. On Tuesday, October 22, a ticket for the Oz Lotto was purchased at Central Station News, which later brought the player a grand prize of AUD 8 million (approximately USD 5.15 million).
The winner only came forward on Saturday, October 26. The lucky individual turned out to be a Melbourne resident. In a conversation with representatives from The Lott, the man recounted his experience: “I usually check my tickets only on Saturdays. That’s exactly what I did when I woke up over the weekend. The first ticket I scanned was the Oz Lotto. I had to look twice. I thought, ‘What? What?’ I don’t know how many times I’ve checked it since then. I sent a screenshot to my adult son, and at first, he didn’t believe me. Now he does.”
For the man, the rest of the weekend felt like a blur as he contemplated his next steps and how he could now provide for his family’s needs. “I want to manage the money wisely—invest it in a way that I won’t have to worry about the future,” he said.
The winning numbers in Oz Lotto draw 1601 were 17, 1, 28, 16, 24, 26, and 2, with supplementary numbers 47, 4, and 41. The Melbourne resident was the only one whose ticket won the first division prize.
Shu Si Tan, the owner of Central Station News, was thrilled to learn that a customer from her store had become a multimillionaire. The AUD 8 million win was a record for her shop, although since 2009, tickets sold there have brought players prizes nine times, including first division wins.
In related news, a woman from Queensland recently won the third-largest jackpot in Australian lottery history.
