The Democratic Alliance party has officially introduced a new bill, B11-2024, aimed at regulating the iGaming sector in the Parliament of South Africa. Titled the Remote Gambling Bill, this initiative is the culmination of over two years of work and consultations with industry professionals. The primary objective of the bill is to establish a regulatory framework for online gambling in the country, striking a balance between effective administration and consumer protection.
In 2008, the South African president approved the National Gambling Act, which was intended to regulate iGaming. However, it has yet to be implemented, despite significant advancements in internet and technology over the past sixteen years.
The proposed legislation calls for comprehensive regulation of online gambling across South Africa. Notably, it includes strict age restrictions for users and aims to create a robust regulatory framework. This encompasses licensing rules, measures to combat illegal gambling activities, and penalties for operators who fail to comply with established regulations.
The bill outlines the introduction of three types of licenses, which will be issued by an authorized regulatory body. Additionally, it will establish procedures for handling complaints related to licensing.
Moreover, the legislation imposes restrictions on iGaming advertising, requiring that it includes messages promoting responsible gambling and is targeted solely at adult audiences.
In related news, the Brazilian Senate has been considering the legalization of land-based casinos.
