Stephen Found, the owner of the Sydney Lyric and the Capitol Theatre, has long been planning to transform The Star event center into a two-tiered proscenium arch theater with 1,550 seats and a 1,000-seat concert hall. The latter is intended to host comedy nights, cabaret performances, and contemporary music concerts.
A positive decision from the Independent Planning Commission is anticipated, especially since the city council has withdrawn its objections to the project. However, some modifications have been made to the scale and design of the theater complex to reduce its visual impact on nearby residential areas. For instance, a specialized rigging system will be employed for backgrounds and props, allowing for seamless scene changes during performances.
The proposed complex, featuring two theaters, will be built within the center, which currently hosts conferences, award nights, trade shows, concerts, and gala events. Once completed, the new venues will enhance the portfolio of the independent group Foundation Theaters, making Found the largest theater owner in the city.
Robbie Cook, CEO of The Star, noted that his strategy for the group involves supporting its entertainment and hospitality ventures, several of which are nearing completion. However, he cautioned that the casino operator can only proceed once The Star achieves economic stability.
Foundation Theaters expects the new venues to meet the demand for additional theaters in Sydney over the next 5 to 10 years. Construction is expected to take two years, and additional time will be needed for interior finishing, meaning the theaters are unlikely to open before the end of 2025.
