Durwin Hickman, an employee at San Francisco International Airport, struck it rich after purchasing a lottery ticket during his lunch break, winning a staggering $20 million (approximately 1.8 billion rubles). The scratch-off ticket, titled "For Life!", cost him just $30 (about 2,709 rubles).
Details of this extraordinary event were shared in a press release from the California Lottery. During his lunch break, Hickman visited a store in the San Francisco Bay Area and bought the scratch-off ticket. As he casually scratched off the protective layer on the second-to-last box, he noticed the word "LIFE." This automatically grants the ticket holder the grand prize: annual payments of $800,000 (over 72 million rubles) for 25 years, totaling $20 million. Hickman was so incredulous that he decided to send a photo of the ticket to his wife to confirm whether he had really won.
"This was the biggest shock of my life," Hickman expressed, sharing his emotions. He noted that this wasn't his first lottery win; although it wasn't a multi-million dollar check, he previously won $1,000 (90,310 rubles at the current exchange rate) through sheer luck.
Hickman also revealed his plans for the substantial winnings, admitting that his lifelong dream has been to buy a home for his beloved wife, making her one of the primary beneficiaries of his windfall.
The lottery jackpot not only benefited Hickman but also the store that sold the winning ticket. L&M Liquor in Hayward, California, will receive a bonus of $100,000 (over 9 million rubles) for selling the lucky ticket.
