Gaila Gishar from Carrollton, Virginia, has made headlines after winning the lottery twice in just three years. In 2021, she claimed a prize of $100,000, and now she has hit the jackpot again, this time winning the grand prize of $1 million in the Virginia Millions lottery.
Gishar purchased her lucky ticket at the Race Way gas station on Carrollton Boulevard. It was a $20 scratch-off ticket. After scratching it off, she asked the store owner to verify her ticket, and to her astonishment, it turned out to be a winner.
“I just screamed! We were all screaming!” Gishar recounted her excitement to Virginia Lottery representatives. She recalled that the commotion in the store attracted passersby who rushed in to see what was happening. However, she decided not to share the news with everyone right away, calming down and insisting that nothing was going on.
Gishar won one of the two available grand prizes in the Virginia Millions game, which was launched last November. Her previous win in 2021 was from a holiday-themed lottery.
She had two options for claiming her prize: she could receive the full amount in installments over 30 years or opt for an immediate cash payout of $571,000, before taxes. Gishar chose the latter. The Race Way store also benefited, receiving a $10,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.
Virginia Millions is a scratch-off lottery with a limited number of prizes. With Gishar's win, there is now only one million-dollar jackpot remaining, along with seven $10,000 prizes. Additionally, there are thousands of smaller prizes ranging from $20 to $500. According to the Virginia Lottery, the odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 612,000.
