Jeff Etherington purchased his winning lottery ticket at a Sainsbury’s store in Harlow on January 11. On that day, the 65-year-old Essex resident, who works as a technician in the automotive industry, swapped shifts with a colleague to make a trip to the hospital.
Lottery winner Jeff Etherington said, “I always believed I would win a big amount. It took 28 years, and now I’m retiring with an extra £500,000 in my pocket. I can’t stop thinking about my luck. If I hadn’t swapped shifts for my hospital appointment, I wouldn’t have bought my lucky ticket at that moment, and instead, some other lucky person would be celebrating my win.”
Following his win, Etherington plans to continue working and marry his fiancée, Kim Reed, 60. He already has five children and eight grandchildren. Jeff added, “We’ve been together for six years and finally got engaged in 2021. We always knew we would get married, but money kept going towards other things. Now, the wedding will happen soon.”
He also shared his thoughts on what he did after discovering his winning ticket: “I was convinced it must be a joke, but the rational part of my brain kept telling me it was a genuine ticket, and therefore a real win. Following that logic, I decided to check the National Lottery app. I entered the ticket number and received a notification that the results were not yet available. I must have scanned the app about 100 times until it finally pinged, and the window showed £500,000.”
The next morning, he confirmed his win and shared the news with his family and colleagues.
An avid fisherman, Mr. Etherington mentioned that he and his fiancée have booked a holiday at a leisure park in Leicestershire. Ms. Reed added, “He’ll be fishing, and I’ll be in the hot tub. We’re still trying to process everything. Right now, I just don’t have the words.”
The National Lottery Thunderball draw took place on January 11. Mr. Etherington’s winning numbers were 1, 8, 25, 33, and 34, with the Thunderball being 5.
