China has supplied Macau with a record 1 million kilowatts of electricity
The State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission stated, "Since the beginning of the year, Macau's economic recovery has been robust. Coupled with rising temperatures, the demand on the power grid has significantly increased."
To meet the growing demand, China Southern Power Grid is optimizing its network and increasing its capacity in Macau. This initiative aims to enhance the resilience of the energy system, particularly during adverse weather conditions.
The surge in energy consumption is largely attributed to the recovery of Macau's gaming industry following an extended period of travel restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Casinos continue to be the primary driver of the local economy.
According to a recent forecast by Fitch Ratings, Macau's gross gaming revenue is expected to rise by approximately 28% this year compared to 2023. Additionally, a further increase of 10% is anticipated by 2025, bringing the total to 258 billion patacas (approximately $31.5 billion). This figure represents about 88% of the gross revenue level seen in 2019, prior to the pandemic.
Earlier, investment bank CLSA conducted a survey among residents of mainland China regarding their spending habits in Macau's casinos. An impressive 85% of respondents indicated they plan to maintain or increase their gambling expenditures. Furthermore, 70% expressed a desire to visit Macau at least twice within the year.
In June, the Statistics and Census Service reported a rise in the number of tourists visiting the city through package tours. In the first five months of 2024, the number of arrivals reached 928,000, marking a staggering 225.3% increase compared to the same period in 2023.
Notably, the gaming industry generated 37 billion patacas in tax revenue for Macau from January to May 2024.
