This week marked the groundbreaking ceremony for the future Grand Island Casino Resort in Nebraska. The permanent facility will replace a temporary gaming establishment that opened in December 2022 at Fonner Park racetrack in Grand Island.
Construction is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2025, with the project estimated to cost $100 million. While the new resort is being built, the temporary casino will continue to welcome visitors.
The new venue will feature 750 slot machines and 20 table games, along with a range of amenities including a 162-room hotel, a spa, indoor and outdoor pools, and a show lounge. In contrast, the temporary casino currently offers 325 slot machines and 7 table games.
During the groundbreaking ceremony, Cindy Johnson, president of the local Chamber of Commerce, emphasized the importance of entertainment in bringing people together. "We know that entertainment is more than just a break from everyday life. It’s an opportunity for us to come together. Entertainment is a driving force for people that transcends age, background, and beliefs. It unites everyone and fosters interactions that might not otherwise happen," Johnson stated.
Shane Grekel, a representative from the Nebraska Racing and Gaming Commission, noted that the start of construction signifies a forward-looking vision. According to the commissioner, the gaming industry has already generated $12 million in tax revenue for the state.
The future casino resort will be owned and operated by Elite Casino Resorts, an Iowa-based company. CEO Dan Kehl highlighted that the facility is expected to create over 700 jobs upon opening. He also mentioned that in its first five years of operation, the Grand Island Casino Resort is projected to contribute approximately $75 million in taxes to the state and city.
