The Danish government is set to introduce a mandatory "gambling card" that will be required for all users to legally participate in the gambling sector. This identification system, which will confirm a person's identity, is scheduled to be implemented in July of next year.
The primary aim of this extensive initiative is to reduce the risk of money laundering within the gambling industry. The government has also stated that the "gambling card" will serve as a valuable tool for protecting minors and individuals who may have unhealthy interests in gambling.
Danish Tax Minister Morten Bødskov commented, "With the introduction of the gambling card, we are eliminating the possibility of anonymous participation in gambling activities. This applies to all areas of the industry. In doing so, we are putting a stop to criminals who exploit the gambling sector for purposes such as money laundering. With this identifier, citizens will begin registering with online casinos or betting companies. Their behavior will be monitored and reported to authorities if anything appears suspicious."
The mandatory identification is expected to encourage responsible gambling among individuals under the age of 18. The "gambling card" will be used to verify whether a casino or betting client has voluntarily added their name to a self-exclusion register or exceeded any self-imposed spending limits.
Bødskov added, "It is essential to tighten regulations for the gambling industry. Many Danes, particularly young men, struggle with gambling addiction, which often leads to serious consequences for them, their families, and their future prospects. That is why we have reached an agreement with the overwhelming majority of parliamentary parties to launch the 'gambling card.'"
