The French National Gambling Authority (ANJ) has released data on the gross revenue of the gambling industry for 2023, which reached a record €13.4 billion (approximately 1.34 trillion rubles). Growth was observed across all market sectors.
The country is home to two major operators—FDJ and PMU—who together accounted for 62.7% of the total revenue. Specifically, FDJ generated around €6.6 billion (660 billion rubles).
The casino sector earned €2.7 billion (270 billion rubles) in 2023, marking an annual growth of 8.1%. The overall gross revenue from the iGaming sector reached €2.3 billion (230 billion rubles), surpassing the 2022 figure by 7.2%. According to ANJ, sports betting and poker showed the strongest performance.
Isabelle Falque-Pierrotin, President of the National Gambling Authority, commented on the positive industry results, stating, "The robust state of the market demonstrates that strict regulation has not hindered growth. This increase makes the task of reducing the number of problem gamblers, which ANJ has prioritized for the coming years, even more pressing."
This year, France will host the Olympic Games, and the final stage of the UEFA European Championship will also take place in 2024. In light of these two major sporting events, the National Authority reminded operators to remain vigilant in protecting gambling players.
The French regulator, ANJ, is an independent administrative body accountable to Parliament. It is responsible for licensing operators and overseeing responsible gaming policies.
La Française des Jeux (FDJ) focuses on lottery operations, while Pari Mutuel Urbain (PMU) specializes in sports betting and online poker.
Notably, in the Netherlands, gross gambling revenue reached €1.39 billion in 2023.
