The Dutch gambling regulator, Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), has reported that the legal online gambling market in the Netherlands remains stable, generating approximately €80 million in revenue each month. Currently, there are 22 officially licensed providers operating in the country.
Legal online gambling was launched in the Netherlands on October 1, 2021. Since then, the regulator has issued 22 licenses for remote gambling. Operators are required to submit their revenue data to the KSA on a monthly basis. Although the industry initially started with just ten licensed operators, monthly reports indicate that revenue has remained consistent since the market opened.
In the first half of 2022, revenue fluctuated, peaking at €90 million in January and dropping to €75 million in February and March, before rebounding to €86 million in July.
While exact figures on the number of players engaging in online gambling in the Netherlands are not available, the KSA reported that there were approximately 563,000 active accounts on licensed websites in July 2022. However, it is important to note that users may hold accounts on multiple platforms. The average monthly loss per customer account since the market's launch now stands at €153.
The KSA also highlighted a shift in attitudes towards unlicensed gambling operators. According to a recent study, 8 out of 10 users prefer to engage only with legal providers. The research further revealed that 85% of players exclusively use services from licensed operators.
Additionally, on October 1, 2021, the Central Register for Self-Exclusion (Cruks) was launched. This initiative assists casino customers at various stages of gambling addiction in voluntarily excluding themselves from gambling activities. Since its inception, over 23,000 individuals have registered in the database and confirmed their self-exclusion.
