The Genting Casino in Southampton, England, is seeking permission to expand its operations. The casino is located in the historic Terminus building, a designated architectural landmark. The second and third floors of the structure have been vacant for the past thirteen years and have fallen into disrepair.
The casino's management has proposed transforming the abandoned second floor into a new gaming area complete with a bar. On the third floor, Genting plans to create staff rooms. The project also includes the installation of an elevator to improve accessibility for individuals with disabilities.
In a statement, Genting noted, "The floors have been unused for at least thirteen years, and there is no commercial demand for office space. The unoccupied parts of the property have deteriorated. A commercially viable use is the best way to ensure the long-term care and preservation of the building." The company also emphasized that the internal changes and expansion of the casino would enhance conditions for both customers and staff.
The building was constructed between 1839 and 1840, designed by architect Sir William Tite. It is the original Southampton railway station, featuring a booking hall, and is one of the earliest surviving examples of railway architecture in England.
Genting's proposal includes a series of internal modifications and improvements. To implement these plans, the company has submitted an application to change the use of the two floors. A request for permission to carry out construction work on the listed building has also been filed.
In justifying the potential renovation, Genting references a document provided by the architect from Design at Source. It states that the proposed works have been carefully considered to ensure the commercial viability of the entire property. It also notes that the internal changes will not affect the structure or appearance of the building.
Notably, the Philippine iGaming market reported record revenues exceeding 58 billion pesos in 2023.
