The Gila River Casino Resort, located near Chandler, Arizona, has announced its official opening date. The $180 million facility is set to begin operations on June 30, 2023.
Gila is one of 16 tribes in the state engaged in some form of gaming. A revised agreement between Arizona and the tribes allows establishments to offer Las Vegas-style games, including craps, roulette, as well as online and in-person sports betting.
At the Santan Mountain Casino, guests will find over 800 slot machines, table games, and a new full-service restaurant. A separate lounge will cater to high-limit betting. Additionally, the casino will feature the largest BetMGM sportsbook in the state, spanning 650 square meters. The ultra-modern design of the facility pays homage to the culture of the Gila River Indian Community. There are currently no plans for a hotel on the property.
Blake Katznelson, the casino's general manager, stated that the venue will offer more than just gaming entertainment. He emphasized, "Traditional gaming is not our primary focus. It's an added amenity that we provide."
In January, tribal governor Stephen Roe Lewis expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming opening, noting, "Santan Mountain will not only bring additional revenue, sustainability, and critical services to our community members, but it will also elevate our standing in the gaming and hospitality industry as we continue to build a dynasty of entertainment."
Gila River is already conducting recruitment efforts, aiming to hire approximately 700 people. This casino is not the only new project in Arizona; Desert Diamond Casinos has begun construction on a new facility near Glendale.
Meanwhile, Century Casinos has entered into a deal with VICI Properties for the sale and leaseback of four casinos.
