In China, the largest jackpot in the country's history has been won, totaling 680 million yuan
According to a local television report, the man purchased 133 tickets, each costing 2 yuan (about $0.27), and placed bets on the same set of seven numbers. As a result, each ticket earned him a prize of 5.16 million yuan (around $710,000).
The winner has chosen to remain anonymous, but it is known that he runs a small business in the city of Anshun. Reflecting on his emotions after the win, he shared that he received a notification about the substantial prize on his mobile phone late at night and was so excited that he couldn't fall asleep. "At first, I couldn't believe it, so I checked several times. I was too excited to sleep," he admitted.
He also mentioned that he had analyzed the trends of winning numbers in previous lottery draws, selecting some of them for his bets while adding one of his own lucky numbers.
Under China's Individual Income Tax Law, the winner will be taxed at a rate of 20% on his winnings, leaving him with a net prize of 544 million yuan (just over $75 million).
This jackpot has set a new record for lottery winnings in China, surpassing the previous record of 570 million yuan (approximately $79 million), won by a player from Beijing in 2012.
This isn't the only notable lottery win making headlines in China. In December 2023, a man from Jiangxi province spent 100,000 yuan (about $13,800) on tickets and ended up winning 200 million yuan (around $27.6 million). In 2022, a winner from Guangxi Zhuang who claimed 218 million yuan (approximately $30 million) chose to keep his success a secret from his wife and children, fearing they would stop working if they learned of his newfound wealth.
Interestingly, in New Jersey, total gambling revenue saw a 28% increase in January year-on-year.
