The Statistics and Census Service of Macau has released data on the average salary of full-time employees in the gaming industry for June of this year. The average salary reached 26,750 patacas (approximately $3,304), marking an 8.2% increase compared to 2023.
The report specifically highlighted the average earnings of dealers, which amounted to 21,660 patacas (around $2,546), reflecting a year-on-year increase of 6.5%. According to Macau's legislation, only local residents are permitted to work as dealers.
Despite a slight decrease in the number of dealers to 23,467, the overall workforce in the city's gaming industry grew to 52,518 full-time employees. This represents a 1.6% increase (or 825 workers) in the sector over the past year.
In addition to rising salaries, the number of job vacancies in the casino industry surged to 498, a staggering 340.7% increase compared to the previous year. In the second quarter of 2024, the gaming sector recorded 1,492 new hires, while 1,143 employees left their positions. This resulted in an improved hiring rate of 2.9%, while the turnover rate decreased to 2.2%.
The positive trends in the labor market reflect a recovery in local tourism and an increase in visitor arrivals to Macau. In the first seven months of 2024, the city welcomed 14.4 million visitors, a 314.5% increase compared to the same period in 2023.
According to the Statistics and Census Service, the number of arrivals in Macau in July rose by 9.5% year-on-year, surpassing 3 million. This figure also represented an 18.4% increase compared to the previous month.
Notably, local residents hold 90% of managerial positions in Macau's casinos.
