Macau's gaming sector has reported record revenues since the onset of the pandemic. In May 2025, the gross revenue of local casinos reached 21.19 billion patacas (approximately $2.6 billion), according to the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ). This figure surpassed the previous high of 20.79 billion patacas (around $2.5 billion) recorded in October 2024, marking a 5% increase compared to the same period last year.
The surge in revenue was particularly pronounced during the first week of May, when nearly 850,000 tourists visited Macau, leading to daily casino earnings exceeding 1 billion patacas (about $127 million).
May's financial results represent the highest since the pandemic began, bolstered by the opening of the Capella hotel within Galaxy Macau. This new five-star hotel, recognized by Forbes, attracted a significant influx of VIP clients. Consequently, during the third week of May, the average daily revenue reached 686 million patacas (approximately $85 million).
Analysts from Citi and HSBC noted that the launch of Capella revitalized premium activity and resulted in higher-than-expected winnings in VIP rooms, ranging from 3.5% to 3.7%. This aligns with Macau's strategy to diversify its market and attract affluent visitors.
Since the beginning of 2025, Macau's gaming industry has generated 97.7 billion patacas (around $12 billion), with an average monthly revenue of 19.54 billion patacas (approximately $2.4 billion).
In comparison to other gaming capitals, Macau is demonstrating a robust recovery. For instance, Las Vegas reported a 1.1% decline in revenues in March 2025. In contrast, Macau's casinos have shown consistent monthly growth, reaffirming the city's status as a leading player in the global market.
It is worth noting that Macau's gaming industry experienced growth in the mass market segment during the first quarter of 2025.
