The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) has released a new study on the province's gambling market, coinciding with the second anniversary of iGaming legalization in Canada.
According to the report, 86% of players visit websites regulated by iGaming Ontario. Currently, there are 47 casino operators in the market offering over 5,000 certified games. Online casinos account for 82% of the total number of gambling platforms. This segment of Ontario's iGaming market includes slots, table games, and bingo, with blackjack being particularly popular among Canadians, representing more than 25% of bets placed on table games.
In terms of sports betting, Ontario ranks among the top five markets in North America for total wagers. The province is home to 27 licensed online sportsbooks, with basketball being the most popular sport for betting.
Ontario's Attorney General Doug Downey commented on the study's findings, stating, "As the gaming market established in Ontario celebrates its second anniversary, we are pleased to report that 86% of users are now visiting regulated sites. This is another important milestone in our ongoing efforts to provide users and businesses with a strong, competitive, and safe online gaming environment that meets consumer expectations."
Downey expressed optimism for the continued success of iGaming Ontario as a global innovator and leader in online gaming. He also noted that the regulator has facilitated the creation of over 12,000 jobs in its first year of operation.
Heidi Reinhart, Chair of the Board of iGaming Ontario, remarked, "When it comes to Ontario's gaming market, the numbers speak for themselves... Our government partners, operators, responsible gambling experts, visitors, and staff have all worked together to help create a world-class market."
Notably, in the Netherlands, gross gaming revenue reached €1.39 billion in 2023.
