Representatives from Macau's gaming industry have reported a revenue increase for September. Earnings rose by 6% compared to the previous year, totaling 18.3 billion patacas (approximately $177.4 million). According to the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ), this figure fell short of August's record of 22.16 billion MOP (around $214.8 million), but still reflects steady growth in the sector.
External factors influenced the month's results. At the beginning of September, the region was hit by Typhoon Tapah, followed by Super Typhoon Hagupit at the end of the month. As a result, authorities decided to temporarily close casinos, leading to a 33-hour shutdown of all local entertainment venues.
From January to September, the total revenue of Macau's gaming operators reached 181.3 billion patacas (approximately $1.76 trillion), marking a 7.1% increase over the same period last year. However, this figure is still 17.7% below the pre-pandemic level of 2019, when it reached 220.2 billion MOP (around $2.13 trillion).
Analysts note that September is traditionally considered a weak month for the industry, as it falls between the summer holidays and the Golden Week (official public holidays in China), which in 2025 will take place from October 1 to 8. Nevertheless, even with seasonal declines and adverse weather conditions, September's results exceeded experts' expectations. This indicates a resilient growth trend in the industry and confirms a recovery in demand for gambling in Macau.
Experts anticipate that local casino operators will regain momentum through large-scale entertainment events, which should support gaming revenue growth in the remaining months of the year.
It is worth noting that Macau authorities reported record tax revenues from local casino operators in July.
