The Netherlands Gambling Authority (Kansspelautoriteit) has released its market report for 2023, revealing that gross gaming revenue reached €1.39 billion (approximately 139.5 billion rubles), marking a 28% increase compared to 2022.
In the second half of 2023, users spent an average of €160 (16,053 rubles) per month on gambling, down from €170 (17,057 rubles) in the first half of the year. The total number of active accounts in 2023 stood at 1.1 million, up from 970,000 in 2022—a 13% increase. The report notes that players can create multiple accounts, which means the figures do not necessarily reflect the actual number of individual users.
Of all registered accounts, 22% belong to individuals aged 18 to 23. The Kansspelautoriteit indicated that the number of players in this age group did not see significant growth over the past year.
In the latter half of 2023, approximately 726,000 users engaged with legal gambling sites, representing about 5% of the adult population in the Netherlands. Overall, 90% of individuals opted for legal gambling platforms, surpassing the country's target of 80%.
In July 2023, a ban on untargeted gambling advertising was implemented in the Netherlands. The report, which is the first since the restrictions took effect, includes information on the impact of this measure. The Kansspelautoriteit stated that the market did not experience any noticeable decline following the ban. However, visits to gambling sites by individuals who are not regular players significantly decreased. Users who had previously engaged with casino slots continue to do so, indicating that the advertising ban primarily affects those who have yet to start gambling.
Additionally, it is worth noting that Curaçao has granted operators an extra month to submit applications for gambling licenses.
