In Tucson, a derelict movie theater has been demolished to make way for a new casino
Peter Yucupicio, chairman of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe, commented, "Today is a very, very blessed day as we embark on this journey and open a new chapter. The theater will be transformed into a casino—not as large as our other establishment, but it will include a hotel and conference center. The revenue generated will be distributed throughout the community to fund renovations, strengthen homes, send people to universities, and improve healthcare."
The tribal council has stated that 12% of the casino's revenue will be returned to the city of Tucson and the local community. Yucupicio expressed hopes of creating 800 to 900 jobs, emphasizing, "The goal is to beautify our surroundings, expand our opportunities, and provide jobs. This is about all members of the Southern Arizona community, not just the Yaqui. As you know, at our other casino, we have a workforce ratio of 60:40, with 60% of employees coming from outside the tribe."
Construction of the gaming facility will take place in phases over the next two years. Once opened, it will become the fifth and most centrally located casino in Tucson.
It is worth noting that the Old Pascua lands were placed in trust for the tribe in December, granting the Pascua Yaqui people 40 acres of land and limitless possibilities for its use. Local officials have also supported the casino project, recognizing that the creation of new jobs will have a significant positive economic impact on the entire city.
Meanwhile, The Star has unveiled images of the Sky Deck for the first time.
