Representatives from Kangwon Land have announced plans to build a new casino, with a budget of ₩179.6 billion (approximately $130 million). Currently, the operator owns the only casino in South Korea where local residents are permitted to gamble.
According to a company spokesperson, the new facility will cover an area of 16,161 square meters and will be located across several floors of the main tower of the High1 Grand Hotel. Construction is set to begin this month, with the project expected to be completed by December 2027.
The development of the second casino aims to create a more enjoyable gaming environment and address overcrowding issues at the existing venue. The opening of the new casino will triple the capacity of the Kangwon Land gaming complex, featuring new VIP lounges that will be accessible to both Korean and international guests via helicopter. Additionally, the casino will be connected to the nearby High1 golf resort by a sky bridge.
In addition to the new casino, Kangwon Land is also working on other projects, including the construction of a new hotel and the modernization of various entertainment facilities. The operator has received approval to increase the total number of gaming tables from 200 to 250 and slot machines from 1,560 to 1,860. Furthermore, betting limits in special zones designated for foreigners will see a significant increase, rising from the current limit of ₩300,000 (about $230) to ₩300 million (approximately $23,000).
This decision comes in response to potential competition from the $10 billion integrated resort MGM in Osaka, which is set to open in 2030. It is also worth noting that the construction of the Inspire Entertainment Resort in South Korea is nearing completion.
