Macau's economy is experiencing robust growth in both GDP and GNI, driven by a record surge in revenue from the gaming industry
The fourth quarter of 2023 was particularly impressive, with real GDP growth hitting 86.4%, driven by a staggering 430% increase in gaming service exports. Additionally, tourism revenue surged by 130% during this period.
The total outflow of revenue generated by non-residents from investments in Macau in 2023 amounted to 117.53 billion patacas (about $14.71 billion), marking a 264.7% increase compared to the same period in 2022. Meanwhile, investment inflows into Macau reached 108.1 billion patacas (approximately $13.53 billion), up 58.3% from the previous year.
2023 also marked a robust recovery for the gaming market, with sector revenues reaching nearly 183.06 billion patacas (around $22.92 billion), an unprecedented increase of 333.8% year-on-year. This growth was facilitated by the lifting of all travel restrictions and quarantine measures related to COVID-19 in January 2023. The new phase of recovery allowed Macau to attract 28.21 million visitors, a remarkable 395% increase compared to 2022.
In the first 11 months of 2024, the number of tourists has already surpassed the total for 2023, reaching 31.88 million, which is 26.2% higher. This trend indicates a continued economic recovery in Macau, providing grounds for optimistic forecasts for the future.
It is worth noting that Macau's gaming operators set a new monthly revenue record, generating $20.8 billion.
