American operator MGM Resorts has unveiled details of its proposed casino resort project in New York. The company is vying for one of three licenses that state authorities plan to issue.
MGM intends to transform the Empire City Casino in Yonkers, which it acquired in 2019, into MGM Empire City. Currently, the venue only offers video lottery terminals, but if the project goes ahead, it will be developed into a full-scale commercial casino featuring the latest slot machines, table games, and a high-roller area.
In a press release, the operator stated that the project includes a comprehensive renovation and expansion of the facility, as well as the construction of a 5,000-seat entertainment center and a BetMGM sportsbook. The resort will also feature restaurants, cocktail bars, lounges, technologically equipped meeting spaces, and much more.
Bill Hornbuckle, President and CEO of MGM Resorts, commented on the proposed redevelopment plan. "A full-scale casino and entertainment center will provide unprecedented experiences and create thousands of jobs. They will stimulate the state’s economy and change the game for the entire region," he noted.
Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano also expressed his thoughts on the casino operator's project. "This is an important opportunity for the city. I look forward to the future, knowing that the development of MGM Empire City will create thousands of well-paying jobs and economic growth that will ensure Yonkers' continued prosperity," the mayor stated.
The operator emphasized that the development plan will move forward only if MGM Resorts secures one of the three available full commercial casino licenses. Currently, New York State is reviewing applications from interested candidates, including Las Vegas Sands, Wynn Resorts, Hard Rock, and Caesars.
Meanwhile, the Mohegan Inspire Entertainment Resort in South Korea is celebrating its grand opening.
