Michigan has claimed the top spot in the nation for revenue generated from online casinos and sports betting
Three years after the legalization of iGaming in Michigan, tax revenues from gambling have reached record levels. The total amount wagered in 2023 was $6.5 billion, with each Michigan resident aged 18 and older spending an average of $822.
As of now, the betting volume for 2024 stands at $5.6 billion. It is projected that by the end of this calendar year, gross gaming revenue will reach $7.5 billion.
Online slots and sports betting have quickly become the largest source of tax revenue from gambling in the state, surpassing the income generated by brick-and-mortar casinos, sportsbooks, and lottery sales in 2023.
Michigan is one of six states—alongside New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Connecticut, and Delaware—where residents can legally play poker, blackjack, and slots from their phones and computers, as well as place online sports bets.
In 2023, Michigan collected $354 million in tax revenue from iGaming, exceeding initial estimates of $30-40 million. Online platforms are operated by both private and tribal casinos in the state. A significant portion of these tax revenues is allocated to the School Aid Fund, which currently holds around $20 billion.
Meanwhile, a Michigan resident recently won $2 million in the Jackson instant lottery.
