In a press release from Latvia's government agency overseeing innovative measures in the gambling sector, updated statistics have been provided regarding the lists of self-excluded gambling enthusiasts. Since its launch on January 1, 2020, the "Self-Exclusion Register" has received 14,620 applications from individuals wishing to voluntarily ban themselves from participating in gambling activities.
This voluntary scheme blocks access to gaming halls and casinos, both in-person and online, helping individuals with compulsive or addictive behaviors avoid further exacerbation of their gambling addiction.
To exclude themselves from the player lists, users simply need to complete a quick registration process on the official government portal, using their personal information and identification code. The minimum exclusion period is 12 months. Currently, during strict movement restrictions, applications can only be submitted remotely, utilizing electronic identification methods for personal authentication. Registration takes effect from the day the application is submitted.
Signa Birn, head of the Lottery and Gambling Supervision Inspection, stated that this scheme has proven effective amid concerns that such bans and similar measures could lead to a surge in online gambling popularity. "The Gambling Addiction Risk Register is one of the tools that can help combat gambling addiction," Birn said.
Throughout 2020, the agency provided over 550 free psychological consultations to gamblers and their families.
A 2019 study published by the Ministry of Health found that approximately 16,000 residents of Latvia are at risk of developing gambling addiction.
Additionally, it is worth noting that around 20 casino operators have applied for a Ukrainian license.
