Experts in iGaming from the Norwegian company Kongebonus have analyzed the volume of online gambling-related searches across various European countries. The study reveals that the Netherlands, Jersey, and Malta lead the way in search interest for gambling terms.
To compare the data, the researchers calculated the average monthly number of searches per 100,000 residents in each region. The Netherlands topped the list, with locals searching for definitions related to online gambling an impressive 1,045 times.
However, the most striking finding was the second-place ranking of Jersey, a small island nation with an area of just over 118 square kilometers and a population of approximately 105,500, according to 2017 data. Kongebonus found that Jersey residents made an average of 915 online searches per 100,000 people each month. The most frequently searched term was "online slots," which was entered 173 times.
Malta, another small nation, rounded out the top three with an average of 825 searches per 100,000 residents. As of 2017, Malta's population was just over 465,000.
Interestingly, Jersey and Malta outperformed much larger countries in the rankings. For instance, the United Kingdom, with a population exceeding 66 million, ranked only sixth, with an average of 669 gambling-related searches per month.
A representative from Kongebonus expressed surprise at seeing such a small nation as Jersey in the second position. "The same can be said for Malta, which holds the third spot," he added.
Notably, the Netherlands recently hosted the 16th European Dealer Championship (EDC 2024).
