The Dutch gambling regulator, Kansspelautoriteit, has released the results of its market study for 2022. This report covers the first full calendar year for the iGaming sector in the Netherlands.
In 2022, gross gaming revenue reached €3.4 billion (approximately $3.6 billion), marking an 85% increase from €2 billion ($2.1 billion) in 2021. This surge in revenue is primarily attributed to the success of the iGaming sector, alongside the recovery of land-based gaming establishments, which had been closed for several months in 2021 due to the pandemic.
Although iGaming accounted for only 31% of the total revenue, Kansspelautoriteit highlights a significant rise in online gaming. The total revenue of €1.9 billion ($2 billion) from both land-based venues and online gambling sites is largely linked to the growth of iGaming. "There has been a shift towards online technologies. It is important to note that the land-based market may not yet have returned to pre-COVID levels and could continue to recover," the report states.
In 2022, casino games represented 56% of the market share in the Netherlands. The growth in the lottery sector was minimal, while the share of sports betting increased from 4% to 10%, with 8% of that coming from online bookmakers.
Regarding spending habits, Dutch residents reportedly spent an average of €258 ($275) on gambling with licensed providers in 2022. This figure was €158 ($168) in 2021 and €221 ($236) in 2019. Kansspelautoriteit noted that the latest report included expenditures from users who transitioned from offshore gambling sites to legal platforms.
Notably, Las Vegas Sands has reported an increase in revenues from Macau and Singapore.
