The iGaming regulator of Ontario, Canada, has released statistics for the local online gambling industry for the first quarter of the current financial year. Over the three-month period, total revenue reached CAD 726 million (over RUB 45 billion). This figure represents a 5.2% increase compared to the fourth quarter and a 34% rise year-on-year.
According to the report from iGaming Ontario, the total amount wagered by users hit CAD 18.4 billion (approximately RUB 1.14 trillion). This was a 3.4% decrease from the fourth quarter, which recorded CAD 17.8 billion (around RUB 1.1 trillion). In comparison to the first quarter of 2023, when users spent CAD 14 billion (about RUB 868.4 billion), the increase was 31%.
Martha Otton, the Executive Director of iGaming Ontario, noted that the regulated industry in the province comprises 50 operators, providing residents with a wide array of enjoyable gambling options. "The revenue generated from Ontario's competitive market directly contributes to addressing the province's priority issues, such as infrastructure, healthcare, and education," Otton added.
Approximately 84% of the total user wagers were attributed to the casino segment. Players spent nearly CAD 15.5 billion (around RUB 961.4 billion) on slots, table games, and bingo. The share of online casinos in the overall market revenue for April to June 2024 reached 73%, amounting to CAD 529 million (about RUB 32.8 billion).
In the sports betting sector, players wagered CAD 2.5 billion (approximately RUB 155 billion), accounting for 14% of the total bets. This segment generated 25% of the overall revenue, totaling CAD 181 million (around RUB 11.2 billion). As for peer-to-peer poker, the total amount wagered reached CAD 402 million (about RUB 24.9 billion), representing 2.2% of the overall figure, with revenue at CAD 16 million (approximately RUB 992.4 million).
In the first quarter of the 2024-2025 financial year, Ontario's iGaming market recorded around 1.9 million active accounts, with average monthly spending per account at CAD 284 (about RUB 17,615).
Ontario's regulated online gaming market, the first of its kind in Canada, was established in April 2022, allowing private operators to legally offer iGaming services in the province.
It is worth noting that Alberta is accelerating its efforts to create Canada's second regulated online gaming market.
