The Biden administration approved a plan on Monday for the construction of a large casino for the Koi tribe in Windsor, California. This decision marks the end of a more than three-year struggle by local residents and elected officials against the establishment of a gambling facility in the picturesque Shiloh area.
The Koi tribe, a small group of Pomo people with roots in Lake County, has long advocated for the creation of a casino resort, viewing it as a pathway to financial stability. Their efforts came to fruition on Monday when the U.S. Department of the Interior placed 68 acres of land into trust for the development of the casino and hotel.
Darin Beltran, chair of the Koi Tribal Council, commented on the decision, stating, "Today is a historic moment. It is an opportunity for us as a people to build an economic future, ensure self-governance, and create opportunities for future generations."
The Koi tribe is currently organizing a casino project that will span over 50,000 square feet, featuring 2,750 slot machines and 105 gaming tables. The facility will also include a hotel with 400 rooms, with operational support from the Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma.
However, the Biden administration's decision has sparked discontent among opponents. The Koi tribe's project is seen as a direct competitor to the Graton Resort & Casino, which is currently undergoing expansion. Once completed, the Graton facility will be just 15 miles from the future Koi casino. Other gaming establishments in Sonoma County are also planning to expand their operations.
Greg Sarris, chair of the board of directors at Graton Resort & Casino, argues, "The approval of the Koi casino project sets a dangerous precedent for California. Other nearby tribes may now seek to claim their own parcels of land for gaming establishments."
Meanwhile, the WinStar World Casino and Resort in Oklahoma has been recognized as the luckiest gaming venue for players in the United States.
