Hard Rock International, a giant in the gaming and entertainment industry, has officially partnered with Greek company GEK Terna Group to build and operate an integrated casino resort in Ellinikon, the site of Athens' main airport until 2001. According to a project press release, the luxurious five-star facility is set to open in 2026.
Construction of the resort is expected to begin within the first few months of 2023 and will take approximately three years to complete.
George Peristeris, Chairman and CEO of GEK Terna Group, emphasized that this initiative could be a turning point for Greece's economy, which is currently facing challenges. He stated, "The development will create a premium tourism destination, expected to provide employment for thousands, generate significant revenue for the public sector, and enhance the overall value of the country. Together with Hard Rock, we are making private investments exceeding €1 billion, reaffirming our confidence in Greece's prospects and potential."
Jim Allen, Chairman of Hard Rock International, expressed excitement about the partnership, stating, "We are thrilled to announce our collaboration with GEK Terna Group and to further expand Hard Rock's presence in the great city of Athens. This development will create over 3,000 jobs for the people of Greece. We look forward to offering our unique brand of entertainment to provide an unprecedented experience for guests of all ages."
The five-star Hard Rock complex will feature a casino with 200 tables and 2,000 slot machines, as well as a tower comprising more than 1,000 rooms (including suites) with views of the Athens waterfront. Additionally, the project will include an entertainment center, the city's highest outdoor terrace, and a state-of-the-art spa.
Interestingly, Hard Rock lost to Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment in the initial tender over two years ago. However, the eventual winner withdrew its interest in the Hellinikon Integrated Resort. In October of last year, GEK Terna secured a deal to acquire its partner and continued with the project.
It is worth noting that Greek authorities previously announced the technical specifications for the casino resort license in Athens.
