The Melco casino in Macau has opened gaming areas exclusively for foreign visitors
The updates were announced on April 6 during the grand opening of an indoor water park and a new hotel tower at Studio City. According to Ho, one of the new areas for international players is located within this complex, while the other two are at City of Dreams. He stated, "There are many gaming tables here... now that customer traffic has increased and visa restrictions for visitors have been eased, I believe we will see more guests starting May 1."
Ho anticipates that Melco's resort revenues will rise due to the upcoming holidays, helping to offset the negative impact of COVID-19 on the business. He noted, "This year, Melco does not expect to incur losses. However, over the past three years, the company has lost a significant amount of money due to the pandemic, and our bank debt has increased considerably, so we will need to work harder to cover our expenses."
In 2021 and 2022, the operator indeed reported net losses of $810 million and $931 million, respectively. The financial outlook for Melco and other casinos in Macau has improved following the lifting of COVID restrictions and the gradual return of tourist traffic.
Lawrence Ho remarked, "Now that cross-border tourism has recovered, we look forward to leveraging our new facilities to attract more visitors to Macau, including international ones." Additionally, the popular show "The House of Dancing Water" may soon be relaunched at City of Dreams.
In related news, Caesars Entertainment has relaunched the online casino Tropicana in New Jersey.
