Frank Weverink, the Dutch Minister for Legal Protection, has unveiled a series of new measures aimed at the gambling industry. These changes will adjust deposit limits and enhance the interaction between operators and users, all with the goal of better protecting players. A consultation period is set to begin in February and will continue until the end of 2024.
The proposed deposit limits will range from €150 to €350 (approximately $15,107 to $35,251) depending on the player's age. Should a user wish to deposit a larger amount, the operator will be required to reach out to them and provide information about the associated risks and the self-exclusion register. The government has also expressed a desire for players to be able to set their own deposit limits in a "neutral environment," free from "pre-filled options" and information that could unduly influence their choices.
Another key proposal mandates that gambling companies inform players about the availability of lower betting rates than the default option. Additionally, regular notifications regarding limits will be introduced throughout the gaming session.
Weverink, who oversees the gambling industry in the Netherlands, stated that the "current situation" necessitated his intervention ahead of an official industry review scheduled for next year. In a letter to Parliament, he noted that existing laws are based on principles that are too abstract. He believes that gambling companies have too much leeway and are not taking adequate responsibility for their users.
"I believe it is essential to better protect players... At the same time, it is important that those who wish to engage in online gambling can do so in a licensed environment," Weverink said.
The minister added that players should be empowered to responsibly set their own limits, but currently, they are not sufficiently informed about the importance of doing so.
In related news, the Japanese government has rejected Nagasaki's proposal to build a casino resort.
