At a press conference, Francis Lui, the Deputy Chairman of Galaxy Entertainment Group in Macau, announced that the company anticipates a new bidding process to begin as early as June this year. The current six concessions, including those held by Galaxy, are set to expire on June 26, 2022.
The Macau government has established a committee to explore potential amendments to the relevant gaming legislation. Officials are particularly discussing the maximum number of licenses that can be issued to operators.
Lui stated, "I believe that a new tender for gaming concessions could start in the second half of this year. We have also heard from the Macau government that expanding the number of existing licenses is still a possibility. Therefore, we will continue to engage with city authorities to stay updated on the latest developments."
He also mentioned that the legislative body plans to complete all stages of discussion by June 2022, as communicated to him by the Chief Executive of Macau. Meanwhile, local media reports indicate that the approval of the amendments is already in its final stages.
Also present at the press conference was Galaxy Entertainment's Chief Financial Officer, Robert Drake, who reported a profitable conclusion to the company's 2021 fiscal year. According to him, the group's "strong operational history," "significant investments" made in Macau, and Galaxy's efforts in corporate social responsibility have positioned it as a key contender for a new license.
Francis Lui further added that the group would like to receive more details from the government regarding how the new regulations concerning casino leasing arrangements will function in practice. As of now, the government has not clarified any specifics.
