Payment service provider PayPal has implemented Gamban software on its platform, allowing users in the UK and the US to block transactions related to online gambling.
The system covers a wide range of payment types associated with gambling, including skill-based games that require an entry fee and offer prizes for success. Additionally, the tool can block transactions related to desktop gaming and slot machines. Sports betting, horse and dog racing, peer-to-peer wagers, and lottery tickets are also included in the gambling activities that can be restricted using the new blocking software.
Gamban users can now also prohibit transactions with brands in the global gambling industry, such as websites offering gambling advice, intermediaries, and forums that support individual betting.
Does the global gambling industry have effective tools to combat gambling addiction?
The developer of the transaction-blocking tool stated, "PayPal's new option, which allows users to block transfers to gambling service providers, is a long-awaited addition to the company's standard suite of advanced options." He added, "Canceling payments through PayPal's new Gamban feature, self-exclusion via Gamstop, and seeking support from the charity GamCare will give gamblers the best chance of recovery."
In 2019, PayPal revised its financial flow control methods and transfer rules after concerns were raised about the platform being used to facilitate transactions on websites offering access to gambling services.
It is worth noting that the European Parliament has approved new regulations for online gambling.
