The Swedish Gambling Authority, Spelinspektionen, has released a new report detailing the financial performance of licensed operators for the past year. The total revenue of the gambling market in 2023 amounted to 27.1 billion Swedish kronor (over 240 billion rubles), representing a decrease of approximately 1% compared to 2022.
The report also includes data for the fourth quarter of 2023, during which the overall revenue of the gambling industry reached 7.1 billion kronor (62.9 billion rubles), making it the most profitable quarter of the entire year. This figure reflects a 5.9% increase from the third quarter; however, it is still 1.3% lower than the revenue generated in the last quarter of 2022.
From October to December 2023, the iGaming sector, which encompasses online casinos and sports betting, emerged as the industry leader, generating just under 4.4 billion kronor (nearly 39 billion rubles). For the entire year of 2023, the iGaming sector earned 17 billion kronor (150.64 billion rubles), accounting for 62.7% of the industry's total revenue. This figure is only 0.6% lower than the results recorded in 2022.
In contrast, the land-based gaming machines and state lotteries sector experienced a revenue decline of 17.1%, totaling 1.4 billion kronor (12.4 billion rubles) in the fourth quarter of 2023. For the entire year, this sector's revenue amounted to 5.5 billion kronor (48.7 billion rubles), down 3.6% from 2022.
The revenue of the state-owned Casino Cosmopol network in the last quarter of 2023 reached 92 million kronor (approximately 815 million rubles), which is 33.8% lower than the same period in 2022. Overall, the total revenue for the past 12 months decreased by 12.8% to 475 million kronor (4.2 billion rubles).
