The Swedish gambling regulator, Spelinspektionen, has issued a warning to suppliers that many B2B licenses will expire this year. Companies must submit their renewal applications at least four months before their current licenses expire.
For instance, if a supplier's license is set to expire on December 31, the necessary information for the renewal application must be submitted by September 1. If operators fail to meet this deadline, they will still have the opportunity to renew their licenses; however, there is a risk that Spelinspektionen may suspend the license until the renewal process is completed.
The Swedish regulator initially granted five-year licenses to B2B operators following the launch of the regulated iGaming market in January 2019. At that time, the oversight body advised licensees to submit their renewal applications promptly to avoid interruptions in the provision of gaming products and services.
It is crucial to note that offering gambling services in Sweden without a valid license is considered illegal, and such companies may face regulatory sanctions. The regulator has stated that detailed information about the application process will be released soon.
Previously, Spelinspektionen revised its legal stance regarding the significance of negative equity when assessing gambling licenses. This change followed a successful appeal by Avento against the regulator's refusal to renew its license, which was initially denied due to negative equity observed during the first two years of operation under the license issued in December 2019.
