Thailand is considering a bill that could pave the way for the legalization of the iGaming sector and the construction of Las Vegas-style casino resorts. The proposal is currently under discussion in the State Council, with government officials expressing a willingness to advance the project as a means to stimulate the economy.
The Ministry of Transport has already suggested a potential site for the future development: Bangkok Port. This location has been deemed suitable due to its developed infrastructure and strategic position. Additionally, Deputy Transport Minister Manaporn Charoensri has compiled a list of other possible sites.
Deputy Prime Minister Surya Jungrungreangkit has also endorsed the idea of utilizing Bangkok Port and the Klong Toey area. The well-established communication network and the availability of yacht parking make these locations attractive to affluent clients and tourists.
Moreover, Bangkok could potentially host three casino resorts. However, this proposal has sparked mixed reactions among residents. According to surveys, around 70% of the population opposes the legalization of the gambling sector, with just over 50% considering the construction of casinos a mistake.
The project coincides with heightened geopolitical tensions in the region. China has criticized Thailand for insufficient measures to combat illegal gambling targeting its citizens. However, it is expected that China will not actively intervene in the casino resort construction issue, as Thailand prioritizes combating illegal operators by creating an official platform for iGaming.
Ultimately, lawmakers are determined to push the project forward despite public discontent. They are banking on its economic benefits and the potential to eliminate the shadow gambling market in the country.
It is worth noting that Thailand is preparing for the legalization of casinos, with the Cabinet having approved a draft of the new law.
