The Thai government is set to implement strict financial requirements for local casino operators
Reuters reports that this amount significantly exceeds similar requirements in Singapore, where locals are charged SGD 150 (about $75) for a one-time 24-hour visit to a casino. There is also a fee of SGD 3,000 (approximately $2,200) for an annual gaming license. Experts note that such conditions will effectively make Thailand's gambling zones accessible only to foreigners, similar to the model implemented in South Korea.
Currently, the draft law is undergoing public hearings, which will last until March 1. Following this period, the document must be approved by the Cabinet and then submitted to Parliament for discussion. One of the key issues remains the size of the gaming zone. Deputy Finance Minister Jualporn Amornvivat has proposed limiting the casino area to ten percent of the total space of the complex.
Research has indicated a high potential engagement from local players, suggesting that the opening of casinos in the country could lead to significant growth in the industry. Furthermore, the approval of the new law would position Thailand as the third-largest gambling market in the world. Despite this potential, a majority of the country's residents are opposed to legalization.
It is worth noting that the Thai government has already selected locations for the future construction of casino resorts.
