The total revenue of Sweden's gambling industry in the second quarter of 2023 reached 6.7 billion SEK
The leading sectors in the gambling industry continue to be iGaming and online sports betting, which together generated 4.18 billion kronor (over $370 million). Lotteries and slot machines accounted for 1.39 billion kronor (about $12.3 million) of the total market revenue.
From April to June, the Swedish Gambling Authority, Spelinspektionen, received additional funding and expanded its powers. This was deemed necessary to enhance efforts in developing a safe online gaming market and combating offshore websites.
At the end of the second quarter, Sweden officially began issuing B2B licenses to companies wishing to operate in the legal gambling market. To date, the regulator has granted 157 licenses.
Camilla Rosenberg, the Director General of the Swedish Gambling Authority, recently highlighted the current state of the industry. She emphasized that unlicensed gambling companies should not have access to services from suppliers working with legal operators.
Rosenberg also reminded stakeholders that most five-year licenses, which were introduced in 2019, will expire at the end of this year. The Swedish Gambling Authority will continue processing renewal applications throughout the autumn. "We have already received a significant number of applications. However, for those who have not yet submitted their requests, now is the time to do so," Rosenberg stated.
Notably, NOVOMATIC reported a revenue of 1.58 billion euros for the first half of 2023.
