The UK National Lottery has paid out over £4.5 billion in prizes for the year 2023

As 2023 draws to a close, the UK National Lottery is reflecting on a remarkable year. Winners have collectively taken home over £4.5 billion (approximately 522.8 billion rubles) throughout the year. A total of 757 individuals won prizes of £50,000 (around 5.8 million rubles) or more, with the largest jackpot of the year reaching an impressive £111.7 million (about 12.98 billion rubles) in June. On average, a new millionaire emerged from the National Lottery every day.
In the last financial year, nearly £1.9 billion (over 220 billion rubles) was raised for charitable causes. This translates to weekly donations of £36 million (approximately 4.18 billion rubles) from the National Lottery. These funds support thousands of projects aimed at making a positive impact in communities across the country. Andy Carter, senior winners' advisor at the National Lottery, remarked, "Whether it's winnings or funding good causes, lives are changed every day. And all of this is made possible by a little pink ticket."
However, it's not just the National Lottery that is reflecting on the year; many participants who won significant prizes in 2023 have also shared their plans for their newfound wealth.
David Lawrence, who won £1 million (116.2 million rubles) in September, has decided to build a golf course in his backyard. The man, who has spent over 30 years fundraising for charitable causes, plans to invite those who can truly benefit from the course to play.
Neil Layton, who won a similar jackpot in November, dreams of owning a steam locomotive. He has been fascinated by them since he was three years old, when he first saw a steam train during a walk with his grandfather.
Seventy-year-old Doris Stanbridge, after her substantial win, is now receiving monthly payments of £10,000 (1.16 million rubles). Having retired, she is planning a holiday. The payments are spread over 30 years, and according to Doris, this gives her a reason to aim for reaching 100 years old.
Meanwhile, property owners in Times Square have expressed their support for the Caesars Palace casino project.
