The winner of the Lotto Powerball, who has claimed a prize of $150 million, has been announced
The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, shared his reaction to the life-changing news: “When I scanned the second ticket, it said: ‘150 million dollars.’ I’ve never screamed so loudly or jumped so high. Since then, I haven’t slept; I just keep pinching myself and checking the ticket.”
The middle-aged Australian was the sole winner of Division One in Powerball draw number 1462, which took place on the evening of May 23. The winning ticket was purchased at the OTR Salisbury Drive Through store in Salisbury, a suburb north of Adelaide.
The winner already has plans for his newfound wealth. He stated, “I’m going to buy a house, and I want to travel the world. I have family and friends I want to help, but I still can’t grasp how big this prize is. Such a win changes your life. I can’t believe my luck.”
The winning numbers for the draw on Thursday, May 23, 2024, were 18, 29, 34, 8, 4, 28, and 6, with the Powerball number being 11. The odds of winning the Division One jackpot are more than 134 million to one—roughly the same as being struck by lightning twice in a lifetime.
In addition to the Division One winner who took home AUD 150 million, the Powerball draw last night saw a total of 4,433,211 winners. Collectively, they won over AUD 89.3 million (approximately USD 58 million). Among the winners were nine Division Two participants, each receiving AUD 276,036.95 (around USD 180,000).
In 2023, 20 Division One winners in Australia collectively won over AUD 552.15 million (approximately USD 365 million). This included a resident of Bankstown who won a AUD 100 million (around USD 66 million) jackpot, making him the second-largest lottery winner in Australian history.
The AUD 150 million (approximately USD 96 million) prize ranks as the third-largest lottery win in Australia’s history. The record remains a AUD 200 million (around USD 132 million) Powerball prize shared by two winners in February, followed by AUD 160 million (approximately USD 106 million) won in 2022, which was split among three ticket holders.
The jackpot increased to AUD 150 million after no one won the previous Division One prize of AUD 100 million, marking the sixth consecutive increase in the lottery’s top prize.
