Clark County Commissioner Tick Segerblom has proposed renaming the region to Las Vegas, arguing that it would eliminate confusion, as few outside of Clark County know that the gambling capital of the United States is located there.
The county is currently named after William Andrews Clark, a 19th-century Montana senator and mining magnate, whose railroad helped transform Las Vegas from a small settlement into a city.
Segerblom believes that a name change would enhance the region's branding, aligning it with counties like Los Angeles, San Diego, and Santa Barbara, which are named after the most populous and recognizable cities within their borders.
However, the renaming would require significant financial investment. For instance, changing the name of Las Vegas's airport from McCarran to Harry Reid in 2021 cost $7 million.
Currently, most lawmakers are open to the idea of renaming Clark County, provided that voters support the decision. Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman has already responded to Segerblom's initiative, expressing her desire for Tick and the county to become part of the globally recognized city.
Las Vegas is known as the gambling capital of the U.S. and the world's most popular casino destination. However, the Las Vegas Strip, a seven-kilometer stretch of the boulevard that houses most of the casinos, is actually located outside the city limits. For many tourists, their journey to Vegas begins at Harry Reid International Airport and continues along the Strip, meaning they may never actually visit the city itself.
In the meantime, the Mirage hotel-casino in Las Vegas has announced a $1.6 million giveaway.
