The Clark County Zoning Commission voted this week to extend the timeline for a previously approved project by Wynn Resorts in Las Vegas. This project involves a third casino resort that the operator has long planned to build near its existing properties, Wynn Las Vegas and Encore, on the Las Vegas Strip.
The new deadline for the start of construction has been set for April 2026. The commission made this decision after a representative from Wynn explained that the COVID-19 pandemic had delayed the implementation of all the company's projects. However, Wynn now intends to develop a vacant 140,000-square-foot parcel of land that once housed the New Frontier hotel-casino. The new resort is expected to feature 1,100 hotel rooms and 2,600 square meters of gaming space.
In 2022, the operator funded a study to determine the maximum height for the building. The results indicated that the Federal Aviation Administration approved the construction of a 195-meter structure on the site.
Wynn Resorts is not the first gaming operator to have plans for this available land. In 2015, the Australian group Crown Resorts purchased the property for $240 million. The company announced plans to build the $6 billion Alon Las Vegas resort but abandoned the project a year later.
Wynn acquired the site in 2018 for $336 million. Subsequently, the company announced plans for the Wynn West casino resort, named for its location on the west side of the Las Vegas Strip, directly across from Wynn Las Vegas and Encore.
Notably, Fitch Ratings has projected that the Wynn casino resort will contribute to a 4% growth in the GDP of Ras Al Khaimah over the next two years.
